LONDON, ON - Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall on the campus of Western University, the Gryphons women's volleyball team saw their 2015-16 season come to an end with a 3-1 loss to the Western Mustangs in an OUA Quarter-final showdown. Set scores were 14-25, 25-15, 18-25 & 17-25. Western advances to the OUA Final Four where they will be joined by Toronto, Ryerson and McMaster.
The Western Mustangs posted a 16-3 record during the regular season with just one of those three losses coming on their home court. The already difficult task of knocking off the Mustangs in their own gym became even tougher when the Gryphons got off to a slow start and found themselves down 6-0 and 16-6 by the technical timeout. The sloppy start saw the Gryphons commit too many unforced errors and as a result, they found themselves on the wrong end of a 14-25 opening set.
In the second set, the Gryphons responded nicely. Despite falling behind early, the Gryphs were able to bounce back by going on a long serving run that propelled the visitors to a 25-15 win to tie the match at a set apiece. The third set was close early on with the teams tied at 8-8, but some more Gryphon errors allowed the Mustangs to take a 16-12 lead at the technical timeout. Western wouldn't look back from there as they would go on to take the set 25-18. In the fourth set, Western was able to score several block points late to seal a 25-17 set and win the match 3-1.
The Gryphons were led by rookie
Meghan Morelli who had 12 kills while also providing some solid play defensively. "Our squad didn't start well today in the first set but we recovered well in set 2 and fought hard the rest of the way. Unfortunately, we made too many errors against a top team and were not able to get the result we wanted," said Gryphons Head Coach
Paul Funk.
The Gryphons posted a 9-10 record during the regular season and qualified for the postseason for a third consecutive year.
