GUELPH, ON - Thursday night at the Gryphon Centre, the Gryphons women's hockey team erased a 3-1 third period deficit and defeated the York Lions 4-3 in overtime.
Meagan Lee scored the OT winner for the Gryphons who improve to 5-1-1 on the season while York falls to 2-3-2.
Some sloppy play by the Gryphons in their own end led to a pair of 1st period goals by York. The Gryphons would get on the board early in the 2nd period thanks to a power play goal from rookie forward
Sydney Davison. A wide point shot from
Katherine Bailey saw the puck richochet back into a dangerous area off the end boards. After
Kelly Gribbons shoveled it to Davison, the rookie had her team-leading 5th goal of the season. It was an especially memorable goal for Davison considering the unique family ties associated with this game. Sydney Davison was playing against her identical twin sister, Taylor, who plays defence for the York Lions. Sydney had the early personal bragging rights on her sister thanks to that early goal, but the Lions held a 3-1 lead heading to the 3rd.

The Gryphons would come out strong in the final period and were rewarded at the 7:04 mark with a goal from third year winger
Kaitlin Lowy. Lowy was able to show off some great hand-eye coordination by scoring on her own rebound by batting the puck out of mid-air to trim the U of G deficit to 3-2. Just over two minutes after the Lowy goal, the Gryphons would find the tying goal when rookie forward
Stephanie Gava (Mississauga, ON) was able to react to a puck bouncing off the end boards to tie the game at 3-3.
In overtime, a terrific effort by Kaitlin Lowy in the offensive zone would end with a centering attempt which was potted by third year blueliner Meagan Lee for the OT winner.
Kelly Gribbons finished with 3 assists on the night while goalie
Valerie Lamenta bounced back from a slow start to turn away 25 of the 28 shots sent her way for the win. The Gryphons will be back in action on home ice once again on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 5) when they host the Queen's Gaels. Puck drop is set for 2pm.
