WHKY: Gryphons Win 5-2 on the Road versus Windsor

WINDSOR, ON - The defending McCaw Cup champions will head into the exam/Christmas break in a familiar spot:  first place in the OUA standings. Saturday in Windsor, the Gryphons women's hockey team wrapped up the first half of their 2016-17 regular season schedule by picking up a 5-2 road win over the Windsor Lancers. With the result, the Gryphons improve to 11-2-1 on the season while Windsor falls to 5-6-2.

Coming off a 6-0 win over Laurier on home ice Wednesday night, the Gryphons took that scoring touch with them on the road Saturday in Windsor and finished with five goals. Fourth year winger Brittany St. James, who scored a goal and had an assist in Wednesday's win over Laurier, would open the scoring on Saturday midway through the 1st period after teeing up a slap shot for her 3rd goal of the season. The Gryphons held a slim 2-1 lead heading to the 3rd period, but St. James would extend the lead to 3-1 with a power play goal for her second of the night and fourth of the season. St. James would also assist on the next two Guelph goals to give her a four-point night and a six-point weekend.

Gryphons rookie forward Sydney Davison scored her 8th goal of the season to push the lead to 4-1 before fellow rookie Stephanie Gava capped the Gryphons scoring with her 4th of the campaign.

Sophie Contant was the Gryphons other goal scorer on the night, potting her 3rd of the season back in the 2nd period.

Valerie Lamenta made 22 saves on the night for her 9th win of the season.

The Gryphons will resume their regular season schedule on Thursday, January 5 when they host the third-place Waterloo Warriors (8-3-1).
