TORONTO, ON - Gryphons rookie goalie
Aurore Beaulieu made the first start of her university career Saturday afternoon against Ryerson. They say it's not how you start, it's how you finish. After giving up a goal 9 seconds into the game, Beaulieu would go on to make 22 saves in a 4-2 win and earn
Player of the Game honours for her team.
After Ryerson was able to open the scoring just 9 seconds into the game, the Gryphons would answer back less than two minutes later when
Kelly Gribbons was able to jam home her third of the season to tie the game at 1-1. It would stay that way until the 5:11 mark of the second period when Gryphons rookie forward
Kristen Jay (Thornhill, ON) would score her first as a Gryphon, firing home a shot short-side during a partial break to give Guelph a 2-1 lead.
After Ryerson tied the game at 2-2, the Gryphons would score twice during an extended 5-on-3 advantage to take control of the game. The first power play goal came from Gribbons, who was able to score her 2nd of the night and team-leading fourth of the season by going on an end-to-end rush that ended with her tucking the puck under the crossbar to make it a 3-2 game. 34 seconds later, with the Gryphons now working with a 5-on-4 power play,
Katherine Bailey's hard wrist shot from the point would deflect off a Ryerson player and in to give Guelph a 4-2 lead.
The two teams would combine for a scoreless third period, thanks in part to Beaulieu who made a couple critical saves during a Gryphon penalty kill to keep it a two-goal game.
The Gryphons will now head to Kingston to wrap up a three-game road trip with an afternoon game against Queen's on Sunday, Oct. 30th. Puck drop is set for 2:30pm.
