WINDSOR, ON - Friday night at South Windsor Arena the Gryphons men's hockey team suffered a 5-2 defeat to the Windsor Lancers. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 3-3-0 on the season while Windsor improves to 3-2.
The Gryphons got off to a strong start in the opening period and were able to get on the board first thanks to a power play marker from third year winger
Seth Swenson. Swenson was able to bang home a rebound off a point shot for his first goal of the season.
Mac Nichol and
Andres Kopstals picked up assists on the play. Windsor would answer back with three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead heading to the final period of play.
In what was a back-and-forth game with good chances at both ends throughout, it would be the Gryphons turn to respond in the third period of play. Gryphons second year centre Rob Lepine was sent in all alone but hauled down from behind resulting in a penalty shot. Lepine would make no mistake on the penalty shot, beating Windsor goalie Kris Joyce high glove side to trim the deficit to 3-2.
With under eight minutes remaining, the Lancers were able to extend their lead back to two before adding an empty netter late to take it 5-2 in a game that was much closer than the final score indicated.
The Gryphons will next be in action on Friday, October 28 when they travel to London for a matchup against the Western Mustangs. The Gryphons defeated the Mustangs 3-2 earlier this season when they met for Guelph's home opener back on October 6.
