WSCR: Gryphons & Mustangs Play to Scoreless Draw

GUELPH, ON - When it comes to OUA women's soccer, there is not much separating the Western Mustangs and Guelph Gryphons in the OUA West Division standings. That was reflected in Thursday night's game at the Gryphons Soccer Complex where the two divisional rivals played to a 0-0 draw in rainy conditions. With the result, the Gryphons (9-2-4) remain 2 points behind Western (9-0-6) for second place in the division.

The Gryphons best scoring chance of the game came with 10 minutes remaining when third year midfielder Danielle Canhoto sent a shot from just inside the 18-yard box past the Western keeper, but off the post.

Gryphons third year goalkeeper Libby Brenneman (Baden, ON) made five saves on the night and leads the country in shutouts. Thursday night marked Brenneman's 9th clean sheet of the season.

The top two teams in the OUA West Division will receive a bye in the opening round of the playoffs. The Gryphons, who currently sit 3rd, still have a legitimate shot at leap-frogging Western and securing second in the standings. In order to do so, Guelph would need to defeat Windsor in their final game, and have Western lose their final game, which sees the Mustangs travel to York to face the No. 4-ranked Lions (10-0-3). Both games are scheduled to kickoff on Sunday, October 23 at 1pm. Should the Gryphons have the lead versus Windsor, there will be plenty of eyes on the out-of-town scoreboard to see what is happening up at York University.

The Gryphons game versus Windsor on Sunday will be played at Alumni Stadium and can be seen live online at www.oua.tv.
