MSCR: Gryphons Fall 2-0 at Home to Laurier

Box Score
Guelph, ON - Tuesday afternoon at the Gryphon Soccer Complex the Gryphons Men's Soccer team lost 2-1 against the Laurier Golden Hawks. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 3-3-1 while the Golden Hawks improve to 3-2-2. The rare Tuesday afternoon start time signaled the Gryphons annual "school day" match, where several local elementary schools let out students to watch the game. Guelph's best chance of the opening half came off a corner in the 33rd minute. Midfielder Zac Rushe (Mississauga, ON) curled one into Justin Springer. The Gryphon captain, who is always a threat in the air, sent a header just wide of the mark. The Gryphons and Hawks were scoreless after 45 minutes of play. In the second half, Laurier would open the scoring in the 61st minute with a tally from the OUA's second-leading scorer, Niklas Bauer. On a play that looked dangerously close to being offside, Bauer was sent in and was able to slide home his seventh goal of the season past Gryphon keeper Braden Taylor to give Laurier a 1-0 lead. In the 76th minute, Bauer would this time play the role of set-up man, laying off for Nikola Miokovic whose left-footed strike from just outside the 18 would ricochet off the post and in to give Laurier a 2-0 lead.

With the loss, Guelph swaps spots with Laurier, falling to sixth in the West Division, while the Golden Hawks move to fifth. On Saturday the Gryphons travel to Sault Ste. Marie to face the last-place Algoma Thunderbirds.
