Gryphons Lose in Four Sets to Warriors

Waterloo, ON - Saturday night at the University of Waterloo, the Gryphons Men's Volleyball team lost 3-sets-to-1 to the Warriors. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 1-4 while the Warriors improve to 2-3.

Coming off of a straight sets victory in their last match over Windsor, the Gryphons carried that good form into the opening set on Saturday night. Guelph was able to take the opening set 25-20. The 2nd set was a tight affair throughout. A long rally would end with a point for the Gryphons, bringing them within two as they trailed the Warriors 14-16. However, Waterloo was able score the next three straight points as they would go on to take the 2nd set 25-18.

After the Warriors took the 3rd set 25-21, they would go on a run in the 4th set to effectively seal the match. With Waterloo leading 6-5 in the 4th, the Warriors scored 7 straight points to take a commanding 13-5 lead. The Gryphons fought back and got it to within two points and were trailing just 21-19, forcing the Warriors to call a timeout. The Gryphons would add another kill out of the timeout to make it a 21-20 game, but the Warriors would rally from there, winning 4 of the next 5 points to take the 4th set 25-21 and the match 3-sets-to-1.

The Gryphons did not have an answer for Waterloo's third year outside Braden Cok who finished with a game-high 20 kills. The Gryphons were led by Zach Newman with 11 kills. Dallas Keith and Josh Green each had 7 digs.

The Gryphons are in action again on Sunday (Nov. 15) when they travel to York University to face the 3-3 Lions.
