Gryphons WRGBY vs Queen's 2014

Rugby - Women

WRGBY Preview: Perennial Powers Collide as No. 2 Gryphons Host No. 3 Queen's

Guelph, ON - The Gryphons Women's Rugby team has dominated every opponent they have faced this season. Now comes their toughest test. On Friday night (Oct. 9) at 6pm under the lights at Varsity Field, the No. 2 Gryphons (4-0) play host to the No. 3 Queen's Gaels (4-0) in a matchup of two of the top Women's Rugby programs in the country.

The 2015 season has been a remarkable one thus far for the Gryphons Women's Rugby team as they have outscored their opponents by a combined total of 391-3. The most impressive of their four wins so far this season came on Homecoming weekend when they disposed of the defending CIS Bronze medalist Western Mustangs 88-0 back on Sept. 19. Leading the way for the Gryphons this season has been fourth year Fullback Alexandra King (Ottawa, ON) who currently leads the OUA in scoring 100 points (8 tries, 30 converts). The Gryphons actually boast three of the top four leading scorers in the conference with Daria Keane (Sarnia, ON) coming in at 2nd with 70 points thanks to a league-best 14 tries, while Kendra Blackbourn (Georgetown, ON) ranks 4th in the OUA with 46 points (6 tries, 8 converts).

The only non-Gryphon in the top 4 in scoring happens to play for the Gaels. The Gryphons will be scheming to contain Gaels' talented 2nd year Fullback Emma Chown (Barrie, ON) who has is second to only Daria Keane with 11 tries on the season. Queen's also boasts a pair of CIS All-Canadians from a year ago in 4th year Centre Lauren McEwen and 3rd year Hooker Gillian Pegg. The last time the Gryphons and Gaels met was in the OUA Semi-finals a year ago, where the Gryphons were able to come out on top of hard-fought 29-21 victory. That victory was especially sweet for the Gryphons as it served as some revenge for the 2013 season in which Queen's was able to snap Guelph's streak of consecutive OUA titles at five thanks to a 19-15 Gaels win in the title game. On Friday night, these two perennial powers will write the latest chapter in their rvialry in what is the final game of the regular season for both clubs.

The Gryphons Women's Rugby team will host an OUA Quarter-final match on Saturday, October 17 at Varsity Field. Kickoff is set for 12pm with the opponent yet to be determined.
