Box Score Sudbury, ON - One night after picking up a win in North Bay, the Gryphons were able to pick up another two points with a win over Laurentian on Halloween night in Sudbury. The Gryphons won 3-2 to improve to 3-4-0 on the season. With the loss, the Laurentian Voyageurs fall to 2-5-0.
Seth Swenson led the way with two goals, giving him four goals in two games after also scoring twice on Friday night versus Nipissing.
Just over a minute and a half into the opening period, the Gryphons lost one of their top forwards for the game after
Tryg Strand was given a 10-minute-misconduct for a check to the head. Not only was Strand gone, but Laurentian was also given a five minute power play. Fortunately for the Gryphons, their penalty kill unit was outstanding, limiting the Voyageurs to just one shot over the course of the five minute power play. Later in the period, the Gryphons would have a power play chance of their own after Laurentian was called for too many men on the ice. During the 5-on-4, a point shot from Captain
Nick Trecapelli would ricochet off the back boards and right to Seth Swenson (Parker, Colorado) who would pot his 3rd goal of the season to give the Gryphons a 1-0 lead heading to the 2nd period.
In the 2nd, Swenson was at it again, this time driving hard to the net and cutting across the face of goal before tucking in his 2nd goal of the night. For Swenson, it capped a memorable weekend as the second year man picked up 5 points in 2 games on the weekend (4 goals, 1 assist). The Gryphons took a two-goal lead to the final period.
In the 3rd, Laurentian was able to get on the board and trim the deficit to 2-1. But midway through the period, the Gryphons two-goal lead would be restored when
Michael Stevens set up
Cody Thompson in the slot. Thompson ripped a shot top shelf for his second goal of the season to put Guelph up 3-1. Laurentian would not go down easily however. With 2:40 remaining in regulation, Brent Pedersen scored for the Voyageurs to make it a 3-2 game, setting up a frantic final few minutes. With the goalie pulled for the extra attacker, Laurentian would throw everything they had at the Gryphons but were unable to find a way past
Andrew D'Agostini who made several key stops down the stretch. On the night, Laurentian outshot the Gryphons 40-32, with 33 of their 40 shots coming in the final two periods. D'Agostini was up to the task however, making 38 saves on the night for his second win in as many nights.
After the 2-0 road trip to northern Ontario, the Gryphons now return home for a Friday night (Nov. 6) matchup with U.Q.T.R. in a re-match of the Queen's Cup and CIS Bronze medal game. Puck drop is set for 7:30pm at the Gryphon Centre.
