Box Score
North Bay, ON - Friday night in North Bay, the Gryphons Men's Hockey team won 3-2 over the Nipissing Lakers in double overtime. With the win, the Gryphons improve to 2-4-0 on the season while the Nipissing Lakers fall to 2-3-2 on the year.
Â
In the Gryphons previous game, they dominated play but had nothing to show for it against Western. Friday night, the script seemed to be repeating itself early on as the Gryphons outshot Nipissing 14-4 in the opening period but had nothing to show for it as the game was 0-0 after 20 minutes of play. In the second period, the Gryphons would be rewarded as highly-touted newcomer
Sean Robertson would score his first goal in U of G colours to give the Gryphons a 1-0 lead. Later in the period, the Gryphons would extend their lead to 2-0 on a goal from second year for
Seth Swenson (Parker, Colorado). For Swenson, it was his 3rd point in as many games. Nipissing was able to get on the board themselves before the end of the period, but the Gryphons took a 2-1 lead to the third.
Â
With 9:47 to go in the final period, Nipissing would tie the game up at 2-2 when Lakers forward Colin Campbell was able to bank one in off
Andrew D'Agostini and in on a delayed penalty. That was it for goal scoring in the third period as the two teams would head to overtime tied 2-2. After the initial overtime period solved nothing, the Gryphons and Lakers would go to a 3-on-3 for the second OT period. Not surprisingly, that format resulted in plenty of chances at both ends. Moments after the Lakers hit the post, the Gryphons would score the winner at the other end when a
Scott Simmonds shot was beautifully re-directed in by Seth Swenson for his second goal of the night giving the Gryphons the 3-2 victory. Swenson, who also assisted on the game's opening goal, finished with three points on the night while
Robert Lepine (Killaloe, ON) picked up his first points as a Gryphon with two assists in the game.
Â
Final shots were dead even at 32-32. Andrew D'Agostini picks up the win. The Gryphons are right back in action on Saturday night in Sudbury as they face the Laurentian Voyageurs (2-4-0). Both teams will head into the game fresh off Friday night victories as Laurentian topped Western 6-4 in their Friday night clash in Sudbury.
