WHKY: Gryphons Win 3-1 Over Brock in Breast Cancer Awareness Game

Box Score
Guelph, ON - The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team recorded their second win of the weekend Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 win over the visiting Brock Badgers.

Fifth-year defenceman Leigh Shilton (Belleville, ON) scored the game winner for Guelph, and Valerie Lamenta (Montréal, QC) turned aside 25 of 26 shots as she notched her third win of the season.
Women's hockey action vs Brock
A battle of two typically stingy teams didn't exactly start out as advertised. Guelph's fourth line opened the scoring when second-year blueliner Mackenzie Wong (Surrey, B.C.) deposited her first goal of the season off of a rebound from a Sophie Contant shot. Contant's shot to the stick side of Badgers rookie goalie, Jensen Murphy (Kingston, ON), went off the side of the net, then the end boards, and finally popped back into the slot for Wong, who put it in over Murphy's glove.

With three and a half minutes left in the first period, second-year left winger Kaitlin Lowy (Toronto, ON) went to the box for tripping. On the ensuing power play, Brock fifth-year left winger Laura Neu (Ayr, ON) played it back to the point for second-year defenceman Brenna Murphy (Odessa, ON), who blasted it through a Neu screen to even things up at 1-1. But it only took 13 seconds for the Gryphons to pull back ahead, as Shilton, with all the time in the world at the point, absolutely ripped a slap shot by Murphy for her second goal, and fourth point, of the 2015-16 campaign.

With no scoring in the second period, it wasn't until three minutes into the third that Guelph could get a little bit of breathing room, as fifth-year centre Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, ON) added the insurance marker. Pinkerton made no mistake when a shot from Christine Grant rebounded to her in the slot, and she slipped it five hole for her second goal and fifth point this season. Pinkerton also assisted on Shilton's goal.

anya Couwenberg performs ceremonial puck drop prior to WHKY Breast Cancer Awareness GameThe game was the first time either Brock or Guelph started the same goalie in back-to-back games. Lamenta, who leads all CIS goalies who have played three or more games with a 0.50 goals against average and a .981 save percentage, looked as good as her numbers indicate, as she was constantly in good position and controlled her rebounds well.

Her best moments came around five minutes into the third when the Badgers really started applying pressure. Badgers winger Sophie Herbert, a fourth year from Ryde Isle of Wight, in the UK, who was buzzing all night, had two great scoring chances with her line hemming Guelph in their end for an entire shift. But Lamenta was up to the task, improving her record to 3-1.

The Badgers fall to 1-1-4-0 (regulation wins, overtime wins, regulation losses, overtime losses), 10th in the OUA. The Gryphons improve to 4-0-2-0, good for fourth in the OUA. Guelph looks to build on their two-game win streak at home on Halloween against the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.

Note: prior to the game Tanya Couwenberg, a breast cancer survivor and mother of Gryphon rookie Bradey Couwenberg, performed the ceremonial puck drop.
