Box Score
Waterloo, ON - Saturday afternoon at Columbia Icefield Arena on the campus of the University of Waterloo, the Gryphons Women's Hockey team won 2-0 over the host Warriors. With the win, the Gryphons improve to 3-2-0 on the season while the Warriors fall to 2-2-1. Gryphons second year goalie
Valerie Lamenta (Montreal, QC) made 30 saves for her second shutout of the season.
Â
Last season as a rookie, Valerie Lamenta shined in between the pipes when called upon. In seven starts a season ago, Lamenta recorded three shutouts. This season, she has already made three starts and has recorded shutouts in two of them, while leading the CIS with a .988 save percentage. Saturday afternoon the Warriors tested her early, but Lamenta was up to the task, turning away a breakaway opportunity and later denying the Warriors on a 2-on-1 chance as things were scoreless after 20 minutes of play.
Â
In the 2nd period, the Gryphons would open the scoring on a goal from fifth year senior
Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, ON). Pinkerton would cut out from the corner and in front of the net before potting her first goal of the 2015-16 season to give Guelph a 1-0 lead heading to the final period. In the 3rd, the Gryphons would get some breathing room on a power play goal from
Leigh Shilton. With 5:56 remaining, Shilton ripped one home from the slot for her first goal of the season to make it 2-0 Gryphons.
Brittany St. James picked up an assist on the play. The two goals would be more than enough for Lamenta who turned away all 30 shots sent her way. Aside from that power play goal, the Gryphons special teams also came up big on the night by killing off five Waterloo power play opportunities in the game.
Â
The Gryphons will be right back in action on Sunday afternoon when they play host to the Brock Badgers in what will be the Gryphons
Breast Cancer Awareness Game. Puck drop is scheduled for 2pm at the Gryphon Centre and the game will be televised on Rogers TV Cable 20 and broadcast live online at OUA.tv
