WVB: Gryphons Drop Season Opener Versus Defending Champion Varsity Blues

Guelph, ON - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team lost their home opener to the defending OUA champion Toronto Varsity Blues in straight sets Friday night (Oct. 23) at the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre. Set scores were 12-25, 21-25 & 20-25. The Gryphons got off to a terrible start in the first set falling behind 8-1 and were never in the set losing 25-12. Set 2 saw Guelph take a 15-11 lead but Toronto narrowed the gap and tied the set at 20. Down the stretch, the Gryphons' unforced errors were the difference as Toronto took the set 25-21. The Varsity Blues jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the third set but the Gryphons fought back to even it at 12 all. Guelph was ahead 17-15 later but a 5-0 run by Toronto snatched the lead away as they finished the match with a 25-20 win.

Coach Funk said, "Our first set tonight was the worst set we've played in the last 5 years. We made every mistake in the book and it seemed like we were playing in quick sand the whole night. We had decent energy but we could not execute to save our lives tonight." Becky Breau led the Guelph offense with 9 points (8 kills, 1 block) followed by Jessica Gormley with 8 (5 kills, 1 ace, 2 blocks) and Breau led the defence with 13 digs as well. The Gryphons are right back at it on Saturday when they host the No. 5 McMaster Marauders at 6pm.
