Box Score Guelph, ON - Wednesday night (Oct. 14) at the Gryphon Soccer Complex the Gryphons Women's Soccer team lost 2-0 to the visiting Western Mustangs. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 6-7-0 while the Mustangs improve to 10-1-3.
Western opened the scoring in the 35th minute off of a corner when rookie defender Sonja Cvetkovic (London, ON) found the back of the net. After a back-and-forth first half, it was the Mustangs who held a 1-0 lead at the half. In the second half, the Mustangs would add to their lead in the 58th minute. From just inside the 18, a pass from Western's second-year midfielder Grace Grafham (Burlington, ON) traveled along the turf to Jessica Friend who put popped it into the left side of the net for her fourth goal of the season to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
Guelph's fortunes could easily have been better if not for the play of Western's fourth-year keeper Tori Edgar (Oakville, ON). Edgar only need three saves to record her sixth shutout of the season, but they were all of high quality. In the 30
th minute, Guelph's third-year striker
Krista Lopoyda (Niagara Falls, ON) was close to equalizing if not for a great diving save from Edgar.
Up next for the Gryphons, a crucial match with McMaster on Saturday (Oct. 17). The Gryphons (6-7-0) and Marauders (5-5-3) are currently sitting in a tie for 4th place in the OUA West standings with 18 points on the season. They will square off on Saturday at 1pm at the Gryphon Soccer Complex with plenty of playoff implications on the line.
