Box Score Thunder Bay, ON – Saturday night in Thunder Bay, the Gryphons men's hockey team won 6-5 in double overtime over the Lakehead Thunderwolves. With the win, the Gryphons salvage a split of the weekend doubleheader with Lakehead after the Thunderwolves won Friday night's matchup 8-2. With the victory, the Gryphons also improve to 9-13-3 while Lakehead falls to an identical 9-13-3.
After splitting 10 goals 5-5 through 60 minutes of regulation, the Gryphons and Thunderwolves needed overtime in what was an absolutely wild, back-and-forth game in Thunder Bay.
Late in the first overtime, which was 4-on-4 format, Gryphons goalie
Andrew D'Agostini would make a pair of great saves to keep the game tied at 5-5. The second of those great saves came with just 2 seconds remaining in the overtime period, as he flashed the leather to make a beautiful glove save. That meant that it was off to a second overtime period for some 3-on-3 hockey.
As you might expect with a 3-on-3 situation, it was heart-pounding, end-to-end action. Moments after the Thunderwolves had a great chance at one end, the Gryphons would head down the ice and convert at the other.
Nicklas Huard (North Bay, ON) would slide it over to
Seth Swenson (Parker, COL) who would one-time home the biggest goal of the season for the Gryphons.
With the win, the Gryphons leapfrog Lakehead, York and Brock to go from 10
th in the OUA West Division to tied for 6
th with Laurier. The Gryphons have two games remaining on their regular season schedule, both at home. On Thursday, February 5
th they will host the Western Mustangs (18-6-1) before closing out their regular season schedule on Saturday, February 7
th against Waterloo (16-7-2).
