MHKY: Warriors edge Gryphons 4-3

Box Score
Guelph, Ont. – The Gryphon men's hockey team lost 4-3 on Saturday night in Waterloo against the Warriors, ending Guelph's win streak at four games.   With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 8-12-3 while the Warriors improve to 15-6-2.

Trailing 2-0 six and a half minutes into the game, the Gryphons would battle back with a goal form Carlos Amestoy (Toronto, ON) late in the opening period.  In the second, the Gryphons would tie the game at 2-2 on a beautiful goal from Nick Huard (North Bay, ON) – his team-leading 10th goal of the season.  But the Warriors would score with 48 seconds left in the period to take a 3-2 lead to the third.

Waterloo's lead would be extended to 4-2 in the third, but once again the Gryphons would fight back.  Robert De Fulviis' third goal in as many games made it 4-3.  Despite some great pressure late, the Gryphons were unable to find the tying goal as the Warriors would escape with the 4-3 win.

The Gryphons are currently clinging to the final playoff spot in the OUA West, just one point ahead of Lakehead.  The playoffs essentially start now for the Gryphons, who will next be in action in Thunder Bay for a pair of weekend games packed with playoff implications against the Lakehead Thunderwolves.  The first game is scheduled for Friday (Jan. 30) at 7:30pm, followed by a Saturday night rubber-match, also at 7:30pm.
