Box Score Toronto, Ont. - One night after thrilling the Winter Homecoming crowd at the Frosty Mug, the Gryphons men's hockey team went on the road and pulled off a 4-3 win over the York Lions. Third year centre Michael Hasson (Ariss, ON) scored the game winner for the Gryphons who improved to 7-11-3 on the season.
After a disappointing first half of the season, the Gryphons have started to find their stride in the New Year. Since the calendar has turned over to 2015, the Gryphons have won four of their five games to get right back into the playoff picture.
After York opened the scoring, the Gryphons would answer back as rookie centre
Scott Simmonds (Uxbridge, ON) would score for the second consecutive game, his sixth of the season, as the game was tied 1-1 after 20 minutes.
Both teams would add to their totals on the power play in the 2
nd period. After York scored on the man advantage to take a 2-1 lead, Guelph would do the same as
Robert De Fulviis (Toronto, ON) would score his sixth of the season to tie it at 2-2. Later in the period, De Fulviis was at it again, scoring his second of the game and seventh of the campaign to give the Gryphs a 3-2 lead heading to the third.
York was able to tie it at 3-3, but
Michael Hasson (Ariss, ON) would pick a good time to score his first goal of the season. With just over five minutes remaining, Hasson gave the Gryphons a lead they would not relinquish as they would hold on to beat the Lions 4-3.
Andrew D'Agostini (Scarborough, ON) made 19 saves in the win as the Gryphons outshot the Lions 33-22 on the night. This game marked the first of five straight on the road for the Gryphons who will next be in action on Thursday (Jan. 22) when they make the short trip to Waterloo to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks. The Gryphons have six games remaining on their regular season schedule and are currently battling for their playoff lives in a log-jammed OUA West Division.
