North Bay, Ont. (September 28, 2014) - The Guelph Gryphons are finding their scoring touch early in the season. On Sunday the Gryphons scored six times to defeat the Nipissing Lakers 6-5 in an exciting fast paced exhibition game. The Gryphons
While never trailing, the young Gryphons battled to hold leads and this game was another test of their mettle. Nick Huard (North Bay) scored early again in front of his hometown fans on some hard work in the offensive zone set up by
Robert De Fulviis (Toronto) and
Reilly O'Connor (Penticton, B.C.). Craig Campbell replied for the Lakers on the power play to even the score at one. Guelph countered with a power play of their own on a goal by O'Connor on the rush set up by
Mark Raycroft (Woodstock) and goalie
Andrew D'Agostini (Scarborough). Raycroft scored on a wicked point shot before the period ended with assists to
Jordan Mock (Dartmouth, N.S.) and
Ryan Strand (Prince Rupert, B.C.)
Nipissing answered the bell in the second period with two goals from Smith and Paton to even the game at three.
The third period was back and forth and Guelph took back the lead with a power play goal from
MacKenzie Nichol (Listowel) set up by
Teal Burns (Victoria, B.C.) and Huard. The Gryphons added another for a 5-3 lead when DeFulviis scored on a nice passing play from
Thomas Kohler (St. Thomas) and
Andres Kopstals (Toronto). The game intensified when the Lakers drew even on goals by Campbell and another from Paton. Less than a minute after tying it, Guelph responded with the winner from DeFulviis and assisted by Kopstals and Huard.
Guelph outshot Nipissing 27-22 in the game.
The Gryphons will stay on the road this week as they play Wed. Oct. 1 in Windsor against the Lancers at the South Windsor Arena at 7:30 P.M. in their league opener.
