Gryphons draw with Marauders

Guelph 1, McMaster 1

Guelph, Ont. (September 27, 2014) – The Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team tied the McMaster Marauders 1-1 at home today at the Gryphons Soccer Complex. Guelph sits at 3-5-1 for the season after this game while the Marauders are 3-4-1.

Starting centre Andrea Cimino (London, Ont.) got into the action right away, facilitating strong passing among the forward line. Guelph's effective one-on-one coverage prevented the Marauders from setting up any plays and kept Guelph in power for most of the first half.

The Gryphons had several close opportunities to score, with eight shots on net in the first half. McMaster was the first to get any points on the board with the first goal of the game in the 21st minute of play and the Gryphons ended the first half down 1-0.

In the second half, the team seemed rejuvenated and determined as ever as they kept possession of the play, led by Simino. The coaches made the decision to move defender Stephanie Moore (Mississauga, Ont.) up to the offensive line and were rewarded in the 75th minute when she scored her first season goal to tie the game. Neither team was able to pull ahead in the last 15 minutes of play and the game ended with a score of 1-1.

Gryphon goalkeeper Elizabeth Brenneman made three saves in the draw while Christina Abbatangelo tallied eight.

The Gryphons move on to face the Brock Badgers at home tomorrow (Sept 28), with the game scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm at the Gryphons Soccer Complex.
