Gryphons win thriller in Double OT at Steel Blade Tournament

Guelph, Ont. (September 20, 2014) - The Guelph Gryphons men's hockey team won a thrilling 2-1 double overtime final against the defending OUA Champion University of Windsor Lancers Saturday night at the 15th annual Steel Blade Tournament hosted by the Brock Badgers.
 
The Gryphons will now advance to the tournament final against the host Brock Badgers on Sunday (Sept. 21) at 2:15 p.m. in St. Catharine's.
 
The young Gryphons were relentless with their work ethic throughout the evening and were rewarded when rookie Trevor Morbeck (Jackson, Wis.) scored with just over a minute remaining in the second overtime period to secure a berth in the final onSunday afternoon against the Brock Badgers. Mark Raycroft (Woodstock) set up the marker after a series of chances for the Gryphons in the overtime which saw Guelph outshoot Windsor 7-1.
 
Steve Strong (Oakville) scored for Guelph in the first period on a setup from Rob DeFulviis (Toronto) and William Cochrane (Terrebonne, Que.) to make it a 1-0 lead.  Guelph held the lead until midway through the third period when Bryan McFarlane scored for Windsor on the powerplay to even the game.
 
Chris McDougall was solid in nets for Guelph stopping 31 of 32 shots.  Parker VanBuskirk went all the way for Windsor. Guelph outshot Windsor 38-32 in the game.
 
Despite playing three games in the past three nights on the road, the Gryphons will attempt to win their third Steel Blade titleSunday afternoon at 2:15 P.M. when they battle the Badgers for the coveted award.
