Oshawa, Ont (February 9, 2014) – The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks Sunday afternoon with a 4-2 final to close out the regular season at the Campus Ice Centre in Oshawa, Ont. This marks the Gryphon's 12th straight victory and moves them to a sparkling 21-3-0 record to finish the regular season. The Ridgebacks fall to 13-10-1.
The Gryphons finish the season atop the OUA standings and claimed the division title. It is the first time since 2003-04 the Gryphons finished atop the standings in the No.1 spot. The Gryphons will now host the eighth place Waterloo Warriors in the first round of playoffs OUA quarterfinals for a best-of-three series. Guelph will host Game 1 on Thursday, February 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre. Game 2 will be hosted at Waterloo on Saturday, February 15 at 2:30 p.m. If Game 3 is needed it will return to Guelph on Sunday, February 16 at 2:00 p.m.
"Obviously we're excited about our first place finish, but we know the real work begins this Thursday. We faced some adversity this past week but the girls responded well this weekend with two big games," said Gryphon head coach Rachel Flanagan.
Three Gryphons contributed to the win against the Ridgebacks, with all of the Guelph goals coming in the third period.
Averi Nooren led scoring with two goals in the third period, with
Kimberley Wong and
Marcie Landman also contributing one goal each.
Kaitlyn Mora earned herself two assists against the Ridgebacks, with Nooren,
Kandace Charbonneau,
Brittany King, and
Kelly Gribbons all earning themselves one assist each.
Both Melissa Berney (Bowmanville, Ont.) and Katie Dillon (Oshawa, Ont.) scored for the Ridgebacks, leaving the final score at 4-2 in favour of the Gryphons.
Stephanie Nehring saved an impressive 25 shots on goal, with the total coming out to 27-21 in favour of the Ridgebacks.
