Gryphons open playoffs this week against Waterloo Warriors


Guelph, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team enters the playoffs as the No.1 seed and will host the No. 8 Waterloo Warriors for a best-of-three OUA quarter-final series.
 
Guelph will host Game 1 on Thursday, February 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre. Game 2 will be hosted at Waterloo on Saturday, February 15 at 2:30 p.m. in Waterloo. If Game 3 is needed it will return to Guelph on Sunday, February 16 at 2:00 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.

The Gryphons ended their regular season with a sparkling 21-3-0 record and are riding a 12-game winning streak. The team captured the division title for the first time since 2003-04.
 
Head coach Rachel Flanagan commented, "We're very excited about our first place finish, but we know the real work begins this Thursday. We faced some adversity this past week but the girls responded well on the weekend with two big games."
 
The Waterloo Warriors finished their season with an 8-11-5 record, and in eighth place in the OUA.
 
The two teams met twice in the regular season with the Gryphons coming out on top with scores of 2-0 in October and 5-0 in January.
 
The Gryphons will look to their veteran group to steer the ship. A trio of Gryphons lead the team's offence and sit in the top 10 in OUA scoring. Second year Christine Grant is second in OUA scoring with 34 points (13G, 21A) while Jessica Pinkerton is fourth with 31 points (16G, 15A) tied with Amanda Parkins (8G, 23A) also with 31 points.
 
The Gryphons boast the top goaltending in the OUA with third year Stephanie Nehring leading the league with a .945 save percentage, 1.15 GAA and an impressive total of eight shutouts.
 
Waterloo is led in scoring by OUA rookie leading scorer Rachel Marriott with seven goals and 14 assists in the regular season. Rebecca Bouwhuis backstops the Warriors between the pipes and sports a 0.912 save percentage in 22 games.
