MHKY: Gryphons' late charge falls short, as Varsity Blues hang on for 4-3 win

Box Score
Toronto, Ont. – Friday night the Gryphon men's hockey team wrapped up the 2014 portion of their OUA schedule with a matchup with the Varsity Blues in Toronto.  Trailing 4-1 in the third period, the Gryphons would score twice to cut the deficit to one, but that is as close as they would get as U of T would hang on to win it 4-1.  With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 3-10-2 while U of T improves to 5-8-1.

Carlos Amestoy (Toronto, Ont.) opened the scoring for the Gryphons just 49 seconds into the game with his fourth goal of the season.  The goal also extended Amestoy's point streak to four games.  But after tying the game at 1-1 later in the period, the Varsity Blues would tack on two more goals in the second.  A power play goal in the third period would extend the Toronto lead to 4-1.  A quick answer from promising rookie Scott Simmonds (Uxbridge, Ont.) would get the Gryphons back to within two goals.  The comeback was officially on when former Toronot Marlie Kyle Neuber (Sarnia, Ont.) scored his fourth of the season with just over two and a half minutes remaining in regulation to make it a one goal game.  The Gryphons would be unable to find the tying goal from there as the Varsity Blues hang on for the 4-3 win.

The Gryphon men's hockey team will now be off until January 3rd when they once again travel to Toronto to take on Ryerson.
