Gryphons drop season opener at Ryerson

Toronto, Ont. - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team lost their season opener 3-0 to Ryerson on the road Friday (Oct. 17). Set scores were 16-25, 21-25 & 15-25.

The first set started poorly for Guelph as they immediately fell behind 4-0 thanks to some strong blocking from Ryerson. The Gryphons were forced to play catch up the whole set and managed to get as close as 19-16 before a 6-0 Ryerson run finished the set at 25-16. Set 2 saw Guelph jump out to an early lead at 11-6 but Ryerson slowly chipped away at the lead tying it at 16. The Gryphons fell behind after that and couldn't close the gap losing 25-21. The third set saw Guelph lead 4-2 to start but they quickly fell behind again and could get no closer than two points down as the match finished with a 25-15 Ryerson win.

Coach Funk stated, "We got our butts kicked tonight in almost every phase of the game. Our 25 hitting errors certainly didn't help us but most disappointing was our prep earlier in the week where we didn't have much focus and it showed tonight."

Maddie DeDecker led the Guelph offense with 10 points (10 kills) followed by Becky Breau with 9 (6 kills, 2 aces, 1 block) while Kristen Almhjell led the defense with 15 digs.

The Gryphons next action is next weekend at home when they host the Nipissing Lakers on Friday at 6pm.
