WOMEN'S HOCKEY PLAYOFF PREVIEW: Gryphons to face Ridgebacks in OUA Quarter-Finals

GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team (21-3-2) opens the 2012-13 OUA playoffs against the UOIT Ridgebacks (11-12-3) tomorrow night in the OUA quarterfinals.

Game 1 of the best-of-three series will be played in Guelph on Wednesday (Feb. 13) at 7:30 p.m. Game 2 will be played Friday (Feb. 15) at 7:30 p.m. in Oshawa. If a third game is needed the series will return to Guelph on Sunday (Feb. 17) at 2:00 p.m.

The Gryphons wrapped up their regular season with 14-straight victories and finished second in the OUA standings, just one point behind the Golden Hawks.

Overall the Gryphons sit fourth in the country in team scoring with 95 goals, one behind Laurier at 96. The trio of Amanda ParkinsJessica Pinkerton and Christine Grant continue to lead the way offensively for the Gryphons racking up impressive numbers along the way, all three skaters are in the CIS's top 10 in points scored. Parkins finishes the season first in OUA and second in the CIS scoring with 43 points followed by Pinkerton with 37 points and Grant with 32.

Not to be out done by the offensive fire power, the team also plays outstanding on the back end, led by standout defender Kimberley Wong (Mississauga, Ont.) and in net from Stephanie Nehring (Oshawa, Ont.). Coming off a serious injury that sidelined Nehring for the entire first half of the season, the netminder has been fantastic for the team since returning. In eight games played she has a 1.00 goals against average and a .946 save percentage for a perfect 8-0 record with three shutouts.

This season the Gryphons defeated UOIT twice with scores of 4-2 and 3-1.

The Ridgebacks have qualified for the playoffs for the first time in the programs history. The team finished the regular season seventh in the OUA and set a program high in points and wins in a season with a 11-12-3 conference record. The team is led in scoring by Jill Morillo with 18 points this season.
