Guelph, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphon women's hockey team defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks with a final score of 3-1 Friday night at the Gryphon Centre for their third win in a row. The Gryphons record moves to 6-2-0 on the year while the Ridgebacks drop to 5-4-0.

"UOIT is a tough team to play against, they work hard and are well coached. Our best players were our best players tonight. We saw some execution of things we've been working on through the week. Our goalie Steph Nehring stepped up when we needed her with a couple big saves," said Guelph Head Coach Rachel Flanagan.

WOmens hockey vs. UOIT
The Ridgebacks took possession of the puck quickly in the first half, taking advantage of a Gryphon team who seemed to have a hard time setting up. Although UOIT had more possession of the puck, the Gryphons were outshooting the Ridgebacks early on in the period. Michelle Sabourin (Pickering, Ont.) tried to set something up, chipping the puck over a UOIT defender to teammate Marcie Landman (Alma, Ont.) but she was not able to beat UOIT goalie Cassie Charette (Ottawa, Ont.). The first Gryphon goal came in at 5:23 with a pass from Christine Grant (Mississauga, Ont.) getting knocked away by a Ridgeback defender, straight to Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, Ont.) who tipped it in behind the goalie to make it 1-0, with Amanda Parkins (Kitchener, Ont.) also on the assist.

The Ridgebacks took back possession of the puck again, quickly finding ways to set up a scoring opportunity. They were trying to pass across to the front of the net, but their goal would come from Melissa Berney (Bowmanville, Ont.) who was waiting at the red line to slap one in after a pass from Katie Dillon (Oshawa, Ont.) to make it 1-1. Almost exactly two minutes later the Gryphons would respond with a goal from Christine Grant from the crease after a pass from Amanda Parkins at 11:59 to make it 2-1.

In the second period, the game developed into back and forth action, until Guelph upped the intensity. The Ridgebacks were able to make their way to the Gryphons net, but nothing was getting by Guelph goalie Stephanie Nehring (Oshawa, Ont.) and Gryphon defenders quickly dished out the puck taking it back up to Ridgeback territory. The second period ended with no goals, but Guelph was able to outshoot the Ridgebacks 9-6.

The third period started out with UOIT taking control of the puck, but Guelph battling hard to take back possession. Brittney Crawford (Guelph, Ont.) tried to slap it in from the red line looking for the top corner, but her shot was too far right. Guelph would increase the intensity once again, with their shots on goal skyrocketing, with 10 shots in the first half of the third period and the Ridgebacks trailing with only 2.

The Gryphons made their way back onto the board after a goal by Cara Sayles (Welland, Ont.) who was waiting in the crease for the pass from Amanda Parkins and Leigh Shilton (Belleville, Ont.), making it 3-1 for Guelph. The Ridgebacks were on a power play shortly after Averi Norren (Aylmer, Ont.) was called for tripping at the 16:36 mark. The Gryphons were able to kill it off, and Toronto remained scoreless in the third period. The Ridgebacks pulled their goalie in an attempt to overtake the Gryphons, but the final score would be 3-1 for the Guelph Gryphons.

The Gryphons would outshoot the UOIT Ridgebacks with a shot count of 25-16.

The Guelph Gryphon women's hockey team hit the ice again Saturday November 2nd against the York Lions at home in Guelph with the puck set to drop at 7:30.
