Box Score

Guelph, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons men's hockey team came away with a win against the UQTR Patriots with a final score of 5-3 at home at the Gryphon Centre on Friday night.

Nicklas Huard led the offense with a hat trick in the win. The Gryphons led the shots on goal with a total of 30, with UQTR following close behind with 29.

The first period started with back and forth action as the Patriots and the Gryphons were evenly matched in terms of speed and physicality. The Gryphons were the first on board with a breakaway goal by Nicklas Huard with Rob De Fulviis on the assist. Huard put his shot up in the corner of the net to make it 1-0 four minutes into the game. UQTR put themselves up on the board shortly after with a goal by Keven Robert (St-Remi, Que). Patriot player Tommy Tremblay (La Tuque, Que) would hit the corner of the net at 18:33, just out of the reach of Gryphon's goaltender Christopher McDougall, making 2-1.

The second quarter started out strong with the Gryphons scoring their second goal of the night. A quick shot by Brett Appio, after a pass from Teal Burns, had the puck flying past UQTR defensemen finding the corner of the net, making it 2-2. After a high sticking penalty on Gryphon's player James Merrett, UQTR went into their second power play of the second quarter. The Gryphons did a good job to kill the penalty, but ultimately it was the goaltending skills of Keith Hamilton, who entered the game at the start of the second period, that kept UQTR from scoring.

However, at the 10:46 mark UQTR player Cowan Austrie (Queens, New York) scored for the Patriots making it 3-2 against the Gryphons. A fight broke out shortly after, which put Guelph on a power play when the Patriots found two of their players in the box for kneeing and roughing, but Guelph had only one player in for roughing. In the same minute, Patriot player Guillaume Nadeau (St-Charles de Bellechasse, Que) had a penalty for slashing which gave the Gryphons a two-man advantage. After a close shot, the Gryphons passed the puck back up to the red line to find Nicklas Huard who slapped it in for his second goal of the night at 14:40, making it 3-3.

The Gryphons scored another goal only two minutes later while still having a one-man advantage. An assist from James Merrett had Cameron Odam making it 4-3 for the Gryphons. While still on the power play Nicklas Huard scored his third goal of the night with Kenneth Peroff and Nicholas Trecapelli, completing the hat trick and making it 5-3 for the Gryphons.

UQTR started out the third period on a power play with two Guelph players in the box for unsportsmanlike conduct and holding. Guelph did a good job to prevent any goals once again and kill the penalty. UQTR ramped up the intensity with more shots on goal, but the Gryphons upped the physicality preventing any more goals from going in for the remainder of play, with a final score of 5-3.

The Gryphons hit the ice again October 12th at 7:30 p.m. against the Concordia Stingers at the Gryphons Centre.
