Strong goaltending and a balanced attack helped lead the Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team to their 10
th straight victory, defeating the UOIT Ridgebacks 3-1 on Saturday night in Oshawa.
It was a slow start to the game in the first period as the Gryphons needed to adjust to the smaller ice surface. Leigh Shilton (Belleville, Ont.) scored her first goal of the at 19:43 into the period handing the Gryphons a 1-0 lead. The goal was a point shot that deflected off a UOIT player and into the top of the net.
The Gryphons then took over the second period thanks to goals from Amanda Parkins (Kitchener, Ont.) and Christine Grant (Mississauga, Ont.), grabbing a 3-0 lead following two periods of play. Parkins goal was a great backdoor snipe after a shot-pass from Michelle Sabourin. It was Parkins 17
th goal of the season. Third goal scored by Grant was scored on a breakaway as goalie Stephanie Nehring earned her first point as a Gryphon, making a fantastic save, Parkins picked up the puck and hit Grant streaking up the middle.
The Ridgebacks would score once in the third as a UOIT player got a breakaway out of the penalty box. Nehring challenged out of the red line but was beat as they scored on an open net.
Nehring finished the night stopping 14 of 15 shots.
The Gryphons now turn their attention to the Queens Gaels in a home game next Saturday (Jan. 26) at the Gryphon Centre at 2:00 p.m.
