Gryphons suffer 3-1 loss to Lancers

BOX SCORE

GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphon's men's hockey team took on the Windsor Lancers tonight (Jan 9th) in Guelph for the Gryphon's Senior's Night. Guelph suffered a disappointing loss to the Lancers who took the game 3-1. The only Gryphon goal came from Justin Gvora (Thunder Bay, ON).

The Gryphons add another loss to the board, dropping to 9-13-5. The Lancers now sit at 14-12-1.

The Gryphons started out strong in the beginning of the first and wreaked havoc in Windsor's end. They nearly captured a goal 10 minutes in when Lancer goalie Patrick Van Buskirk (Windsor, ON) lost sight of the puck when it fell behind him, but quick thinking from defender Matt McCready (Kingsville, ON) got it out before it crossed the goal-line.

The pressure finally paid off for the Gryphons at 12:30 with a goal from Gvora after being set up by Edward Gale (Keswick, ON) and Kris Belan (Florence, ON).

The Lancers soon responded with a goal of their own from Isak Quakenbush (Fairbanks, Alaska) at 17:04. Gryphon defence began to struggle and only a minute later Windsor took the lead with their second goal of the night from D.J Turner (Windsor, ON).

The second period saw tensions rise between the two teams as the Gryphons fought to tie up the game. Zach Lillie (Bracebridge, ON) had a great opportunity in the Lancer's end midway through but he couldn't get past Van Buskirk. Guelph led in shots on net by the end of the second but they were unable to capitalize on the action.

Cody St. Jacques (Iroquois Falls, ON), who would finish with 29 saves, made a number of impressive saves in the third with the Lancers drilling Guelph's net. The Gryphons struggled to keep up with Windsor's offensive speed, and this breakdown contributed to the Lancer's third and final goal. Drew Palmer (Tecumseh, ON) ripped down the right wing untouched, and passed to Turner who fired it in before St. Jacques had the chance to respond.

The Gryphons are meeting up with the York Lions for their last game of the regular season tomorrow night (Feb 10th) in York. The game begins at 7pm.
