Angus’ career night leads Gryphons over Laurentian

GUELPH, Ont. – Zach Angus shot 10 of 13 from the field including 5 of 5 from beyond the arc for a career high 32 points, leading the host Guelph Gryphons over the Laurentian Voyageurs tonight at the W.F. Mitchell Centre. 
 
Angus (Burlington, Ont.) added an almost perfect 7 of 8 from the charity stripe and six rebounds in the Gryphons win.  Gryphon rookie Charles Amponsah (Brampton, Ont.) chipped in with 16 points and two assists. Guelph advances to 2-5 on the season while the Voyageurs drop to 5-3.
 
Leading Laurentian was Manny Pasquale who had an equally impressive night with 31 points including 23 second half points.
 
The Gryphons continued their strong play from three-point land in the first quarter shooting 4-of-5. Guelph took an early lead until about mid-way through the quarter when the two teams traded baskets the rest of the way. Laurentian's Alex Ratte led his team in the first frame with nine points on a perfect 4-for-4 from the field. The first quarter finished with the Gryphons grabbing a slim 26-23 lead. The Voyageurs opened the second with momentum scoring back-to-back three-balls to give them their first lead of the game 36-34. Laurentian's defence forced seven of Guelph's eight first half turnovers in the second frame. The first half finished tied 40-all as Laurentian got the better of the Gryphons in the second 17-14.  
 
Laurentian opened the second half with a quick 5-0 run from a Manny Pasquale three-pointer and a George Serresse basket in the paint. Pasquale began to elevate his play in the third quarter, leading the Laurentian attack with 14 third quarter points.  The Gryphons responded with a 7-0 run of their own inspired by a Michel Clark (Burlington, Ont.) three pointer.  The two teams continued to trade baskets back and forth the rest of the quarter.  The third quarter finished with the Voyageurs leading 63-57.  In the fourth the Gryphons managed to control the tempo of the game as Angus took over the scoring and distribution.  He netted nine fourth quarter points en route to his game-high 32 before fouling out with minutes left.
 
The Gryphons turned the ball over 17 times, compared to Laurentian's 13 however Guelph shot 50.9 percent from the field while Laurentian was 43.8 percent.
 
The Gryphons are off for the exam break and return to the W.F. Mitchell Centre on January 3 for a game against the Western Mustangs. Tip off will be at 8:00 p.m.
