The Guelph Gryphons continued their winning ways with another impressive road win beating the Ottawa Gee-Gees 4-3 in O.T. on Sunday. Good teams find ways to win and against Ottawa special teams prevailed helping the Gryphons to their seventh win in their last eight games.
Guelph opened the scoring in the first period on a beautiful shorthanded rush by Matt Lyall (Richmond Hill) weaving past three defenders to score.
In the second period the Gryphons scored another shorthanded goal and this one was of the spectacular variety on a 90 foot backhand saucer pass by goalie Brandon Maxwell (Guelph) to spring Andy Bathgate (Georgetown) for the breakaway goal. Guillaime Donovan replied for the Gee-Gees later in the period. Guelph went up 3-1 before the end of the second on a powerplay goal by Lyall on a redirected shot from Cam Odam (Stittsville) and a pass from Ken Peroff (Astorville).
Ottawa staged a comeback in the third period with goals scored by Matt Ouellette and Nic Larocque-Marcoux to tie the game at three and set the stage for the exciting overtime finish.
In O.T. Ken Peroff scored the winner on the powerplay to seal the win for the Gryphons. Maxwell went the distance in nets and made 29 of 32 saves in the game.
Next action for the Gryphons is Thurs. Nov. 8 when Guelph returns home to host the University of Toronto Blues at 7:30 P.M. at the Gryphon Centre.
