Gryphons drop home opener to Thunderwolves, 6-3

The Guelph Gryphon men's hockey team dropped their home opener tonight (Oct. 5) to the Lakehead Thunderwolves 6-3 at the Gryphon Centre.  The second game of the weekend doubleheader will take place tomorrow night back at the Gryphon Centre with a 7:30 p.m. start.
 
The Gryphons outshot their opponents 37-27 tonight however were not able to pull off a win and start the season with a 0-1 record.  
 
Guelph took a 1-0 lead in the first period with a late power play goal by captain, Edward Gale, assisted by Justin Gvora and Nathan Martine. The Thunderwolves' captain Adam Sergerie, left the game midway through the first period with an injury and did not return.
 
The second period was hard-hitting and gritty, both teams doing an excellent job of defending their goaltenders after the whistle.  Several penalties were given to both teams. The Gryphons were once again able to capitalize on a power play with Matthew Lyall scoring a 4-on-3 goal at 19:08, he was assisted by Nicklas Huard and Kenneth Peroff.
 
The Thunderwolves then went on a scoring rampage, netting four goals in the second period to come ahead with a 4-2 lead.  The first goal snuck past Gryphons' net-minder, Cody StJacques, from a cluster in front of the net at 2:19, scored by Thomas Frasee with an assist from Ketih Grondin.  The second goal was scored by Carson Dubchak from Ryan Magill at 12:32, and the third by Luke Judson from Matt Caria at 12:56.  Judson scored his second goal of the evening on a 2-on-1 at 17:22, he was assisted by Caria and Mike Hammond.
 
The Gryphons made a goaltender switch to start the third period, replacing St Jacques with Andrew Loverock.  Both teams came out with hard, clean hits to start of a hard-fought period. The Gryphons were able to take advantage of a power play with a beautiful goal from the blue line by, defenceman, Peroff assisted by Jon-Thomas MacDonald.  Unfortunately, Guelph was outscored by the Thunderwolves in the third period with a breakaway, unassisted goal by Trevor Gamache at 1:19 and an empty net goal at 19:23 scored by Dubchak.
 
Guelph is back in action tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre for game two of their double header with the Thunderwolves.
