The Gryphon women's soccer team defeated the Mustangs 1-0 this afternoon (Sept. 25) at the new Gryphon soccer complex.
The Gryphons advance to 2-4-1 while the Mustangs fall to 2-5-0.
The Mustangs applied strong pressure early in the first half, setting the tone for what was sure to be a high-energy game. The Gryphons responded by exerting strong defencive tactics that could not be breeched by the Mustang's strikers.
The match proved to be an even one, and the Mustangs defence stood strong early into the second half.
The Gryphon's Rachel Rennick (Toronto, ON) finally broke the stalemate after she was able to get past the Mustang's back line and fired a ball deflected off the post, past the goalie to score the only goal of the game.
The Gryphons out played their opponents and used their finesse and offensive skill to create more goal scoring opportunities. Danielle Naylor (Puslinch, ON) dominated on defence, allowing the Mustangs only two shots on net.
During the final minutes of the game, the Gryphons remained calm and strong, winning draws and holding onto possessions, while the Mustangs failed to capitalize on two corner kick opportunities. Guelph would the game win 1-0.
"Today's win put us in a playoff spot, our goal from here on out is not to lose that," said Head Coach Randy Ragan. "Our players knew the importance of this game and went above and beyond the call of duty today."
The Gryphons will be back in action when they play host to the Golden Hawks October 2, at 1:00 p.m.Â
