The Guelph Gryphons and the McMaster Marauders went head to head on Wednesday evening in Guelph at the new Gryphon Soccer Complex. Both teams put up a good fight during the first half, but the Gryphons managed to push through during the second and defeated the Maruaders 2-0.
The Gryphons move to 1-3-1 while the Marauders record goes to 3-3-0.
The Gryphons were forced to deal with the speed of both Hayley Marler (Ancaster, ON) and Alicja Giftopoulos (Ancaster, ON) who constantly pushed through Guelph lines. Luckily Guelph's defence rose to the challenge and managed to cut off attacks before they ended in a goal.
Gryphon rookie
Kelly Baker (Barrie, ON) made an incredible defensive save after the Guelph net was left wide open during a rebound attack, keeping the Marauders score-less for the first half.
At the 65-minute mark
Jennifer Dunn (Vancouver, BC) grabbed the Gryphon's first goal of the game with a great shot right into the back of the net. Feeling the pressure, McMaster picked up their game and they were determined to tie up the score. Marler almost managed to drive the ball straight through Gryphon defence but was shut down before she could fire it off.
Guelph rookie
Courtney Whiteside (Guelph, ON) secured the Gryphon lead with a second goal after she outran McMaster's defence, pulled the goalie out of the net, and managed to have a shot into the empty net. It was an amazing play and it showed a lot of future promise from one of Guelph's newest varsity athletes. The game ended 2-0 for the Gryphons.
The Gryphons next play the Windsor Lancers in Windsor on Sept. 24
th. The game begins at 1pm.
