Feb. 6: Queens 4 – Guelph 1
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphon women's hockey team had their last home game of the regular season against the Queen's Gaels this afternoon (Feb 6) at the Gryphon Centre. Queens took the win with a 4-1 final.
The Gryphons fall to 15-7-3 but remain in third place in the OUA standings.
Queen's goals came from Alex Cieslowski (Oakville, ON), Elizabeth Kench (Gananoque,ON), Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, ON) and Kelsey Thomson (Martintown, ON). The goal for the Gryphons was scored by Katie Mora (Guelph, ON).
Queen's first goal came only 2:45 minutes into the first period, after McHaffie (Guelph, ON) sent up a perfect pass and Cieslowski shot it right past Gryphon goal Danielle Skoufranis (Thornhill, ON). Guelph soon returned the favour with a goal at 8:41 after Jody Hodgins (Stayner, ON) and Dayna Kanis (Georgetown, ON) set up a great entry into Gael territory and Katie Mora (Guelph, ON) took advantage.
In the second period Mora had a chance at goal when she broke away from the pack five minutes into the second period but she couldn't get around Gael goalie Karissa Savage (Calgary, AB). Queens scored their second goal of the game at 6:03 after Becky Conroy (Pembroke, ON) sent a pass to Kench who fired a shot from the red line straight into the net.
Erin Small (Pickering, ON) had a great opportunity at net trying to redeem the lost goal but Savage shut her out. For the remainder of the period the Gryphons put their efforts into tying up the score. They set up some great plays around the Gael net, but couldn't break through their defence.
The third period proved to be difficult for the Gryphons. Guelph defence struggled to work as a unit and gave way to some scary passing right out front of their own net. The defensive breakdown inevitably led to Queen's third goal scored by McHaffie at 5:18 with Brittany McHaffie (Guelph, ON) assisting.
The Gryphons were granted a penalty shot in the third, which Mora took, but she was unable to construct a plan of action and left the net untouched. Near the end of the game Guelph pulled their goalie in hopes of a stronger offense, but it proved dangerous when Thompson shot from a distance and landed the puck right in the empty net for the Gaels fourth and final goal.
Guelph's Skoufranis finished the game with 11 saves in the loss while Savage earned the win and turned away 15 of Guelph's 16 shots on net. The Gaels went 1-for-4 on the powerplay while the Gryphons were shutdown going 0-for-7.
The Gryphons next play the Western Mustangs in London on Feb. 12
th, beginning at 4pm.
