Feb. 5: Guelph 7 – UOIT 0
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphon women's hockey team took on the UOIT Ridgeback's this afternoon (Feb. 5) at the Gryphon Centre in Guelph. The Gryphons dominated throughout the game defeating UOIT 7-0.
Goals came from Rose Harris (Port Colborne, Ont.) who scored twice, Katie Mora (Guelph, ON), Tayne Hewer (Barrie, ON), Carla D'Angelo (Hamilton, ON) and Dayna Kanis (Georgetown,ON) with two.
Katherine Van Vlack (Napanee, ON) fired a pass to Rose Harris who scored the first goal of the game after the Gryphon offence overwhelmed UOIT and was able to break through the defensive line. UOIT had a couple of opportunities near the Guelph net during the first period but they weren't able to overcome the Gryphons. UOIT forward Gillian Beggs (Oshawa, ON) had a chance at a breakaway play but she couldn't get past Gryphon goaltender Danielle Skoufranis (Thornhill, ON).
At 17:34 in the first, the Gryphons captured a second goal after Jenna Lanzarotta (Mississauga, ON) and Kimberly Wong (Mississauga, ON) set up a perfect play to Katie Mora (Guelph, ON) who snuck the puck in without giving UOIT goalie Emma Thompson (Hastings, ON) a chance to react. Gryphon goalie Skoufranis played a consistent period and shut out all UOIT attempts.
In the beginning of the second period, Samantha Ryder (North Vancouver, BC) and Van Vlack controlled the puck outside of UOIT net giving Harris the opportunity to score her second goal on a distracted goalie. At 8:39 Michelle Sabourin (Pickering, ON) and Emily Corbett (Toronto, ON) set up Tayne Hewer (Barrie, ON) with her first goal of the game, when she outplayed UOIT defence and strategically fired a wrap-around shot past Thompson, landing in the back of the net.
Nine minutes into the second period UOIT pulled their goalie Thompson out and put in Jessica Larabie (Pickering, ON) in hope of a stronger defensive end. Labarie still struggled against the Gryphons relentless attacks and it wasn't long before the Gryphons' fifth goal came from Carla D'Angelo (Hamilton, ON). Erin Small (Pickering, ON) and Tamara Bell (Guelph, ON) sent the puck upwards and D'Angelo shot and fell forward propelling the puck right into the back of the net. UOIT picked up momentum in the last minutes of the period in hopes of a goal, and had a few opportunities on net, but were still not able to take advantage over Guelph's determined defence.
Guelph's Dayna Kanis scored twice in the third period. The Gryphon's sixth goal came from Kanis with the help of Sabourin at 2:01 in the third. The seventh and final goal of the game came with the help of Lucia Mazza (Sudbury, ON) and Lanzarotta when Kanis took advantage and fired towards the net. The puck reflected off of Larabie and landed right in the net, sealing the Ridgeback's fate.
The Gryphons next play the Queen Gaels at home in the Gryphon Centre tomorrow (Feb. 6). The game begins at 2pm.
