Feb. 13: Guelph 5 – Windsor 1 WINDSOR – The Gryphon women's hockey team wrapped up their regular season with a 5-1 victory over the No. 9 ranked Windsor Lancers this afternoon at the South Windsor Arena.
The Gryphons started out strong in the first, taking a 1-0 lead midway through when Jessica Zerafa (Mississauga, Ont.) knocked down a point shot and tucked the rebound behind the Windsor goaltender. Jacalyn Sollis (Vancouver) and Tamara Bell (Guelph, Ont.) earned the assists. Windsor would tie the game five minutes later on a goal from Manon Davis. The Gryphons outshot the Lancers 11-7 in the period.
In the second period, with the game tied at one the Lancers ran into penalty trouble throughout the period which allowed the Gryphons to convert three power play goals in the period and take a 4-1 lead heading into the final frame. Guelph's first power play goal was scored by Dayna Kanis (Georgetown, Ont.) who snipped a puck top corner. Assisting on the goal was Erin Small (Pickering, Ont.) and Emily Corbett (Toronto). This was Kanis's 100th career point. She would then follow up with a beautiful pass from behind the goal line to Jenna Lanzarotta (Mississauga) who would beat the goalie blocker side. Three minutes later Zerafa would get her second of the game on a 5-vs-3, burying a one timer pass from Carla D'Angelo (Hamilton, Ont.) and Kim Wong (Mississauga, Ont.).
The Gryphons built their lead in the third with their fifth marker scored six minutes into the period from Brittney Crawford (Guelph, Ont.) who scored her first of the season on a great 2-vs-1 play with Tayne Hewer earning the assist.
The Gryphons were perfect on the penalty kill, killing off six penalties and went 3-for-7 on the power play. Gryphon goalie Danielle Skoufranis (Thornhill, Ont.) would get the win in net, stopping 24 of 25 shots.
