Gryphons defeat Mustangs and sit 3rd in OUA Standings

Feb. 12: Guelph 4 – Western 3

LONDON – The Guelph Gryphon women's hockey team defeated the Western Mustangs 4-3 this afternoon in London. The Gryphons move to 16-7-3 on the season and sit third in the OUA standings.

The Gryphons came out strong in the first period dominating Western and outshooting them 17-7.  The first goal was at 4:15 on a great tic-tac-toe play from Jessica Zerafa and Tamara Bell to Katie Mora who buried it. Less than a minute and a half later Tori Woods stole a puck from a defender to score a short-handed unassisted goal. A bad giveaway three minutes later saw Westerns Carly Rolph get a breakaway and score on Gryphon goaltender Brooke Siddall.  With less than three minutes left in the first the Gryphons went back up by two goals when Emily Corbett received a tape-to-tape pass in the slot from Tayne Hewer and sent a rocket snapshot over Western goaltender Ulrich's blocker. Western pulled within one with only 35 seconds left on the clock on a Gryphon defensive breakdown.

In the second period Western picked up their game, outshooting Guelph 8-6 but no goals were scored.

In the third period Guelph's Jenna Lanzarotta earned the eventual game winner on a nice pass from Woods and Dayna Kanis. Western would get within one on a two versus one shot over Siddall's shoulder but would not be able to equalize.
