The Gryphon women's hockey team traveled to Kingston today (Nov. 26) to face-off against the Gaels. As expected both team battled hard for 60 mins, but in the end, the Gryphons came out on top, winning 4-3 in a shootout. Rookie Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, Ont.) scored the shootout winner.
Kristen Nixon (Durham, ON) had a superb game and managed to sneak one past Queens goalie in the first period to opening the scoring. Her linemates Jenna Lanzarotta (Mississauga, ON) and Jessica Pinkerton were in on the assists. This would be the only goal in the first, but the Gaels would come out hard in the second getting two quick goals.
Half through the period Nixon would take charge and carry the puck in Queens' end, drawing two defenders to her and leaving a nifty drop pass for Pinkerton, who buried it in the back of the net.
Coming out for the third with a 2-2 tie, Lanzarotta would score a beautiful goal. Lanzarotta banked the puck off the boards behind Queens' netminder to herself and scored on an open net, as the goalie was still trying to find the puck.
Queens would not quit and managed to beat goaltender, Stephanie Nehring (Oshawa, ON) five hole the power play.
Overtime would settle nothing, so the game would head to a shootout. Pinkerton was first up for Guelph and deked out Queens' goalie, so she had no chance. This would eventually be the only goal needed as Nehring stopped all three Queens' shooters.
The girls will be back in action in the New Year, when they host the Mustangs at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2012.
