OT winner gives Gryphons 4th straight win

Jacky Sollis' shorthanded, game-winning goal 1:22 into overtime lifted the University of Guelph Gryphons to their fourth straight victory with a 3-2 triumph over the Brock Badgers Wednesday night in St. Catharines, Ont.

Guelph came out looking very lethargic and Brock took full advantage outshooting 14-8. With just over three minutes left in the first Brock took advantage of their continued pressure and capitalized from Guelph's sloppy defence. Tori Head (Kanata, Ont.), who had an outstanding game was able to answer back with just over a minute to go in the first. Linemates Sam Ryder (North Vancouver) and Kandace Charbonneau (Guelph, Ont.), who were dominate forces the entire game, assisted on the goal.

The second period continued to be sloppy for both teams resulting in only four shots for Brock and six for Guelph. At 6:40 in the second Brock scored off a nice shot over the shoulder of rookie goalie Stephanie Nehring (Oshawa, Ont.)

Guelph came out strong in the third putting pressure on and finally was able to capitalize on the power play. Tamara Bell (Guelph, Ont.) put it in with assists going to Brittney Crawford (Guelph, Ont.) and Katie Mora (Guelph, Ont.). The score would remain 2-2 after the third sending it into overtime.

Only 15 seconds in Erin Small (Pickering, Ont.) was given a tripping penalty. The last match up between these two teams saw the very same thing happen, with Guelph being short handed in overtime. This time the result would not be the same, as Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, Ont.) made a nice pass to a breaking Katie Mora who was checked down at center, but rushing by Sollis was able to take the puck and make a beautiful deke to finish it off.

The Gryphons will return to action tomorrow, hosting the Laurier Golden Hawks at 7:30 p.m.
