Gryphons take 3-1 win over Warriors

The Guelph Gryphons matched up against the Waterloo Warriors today (Oct. 23rd) in Guelph at the new Gryphon Soccer Complex. The Gryphons played a strong game and took the win 3-1.

Guelph adds another win to the board finishing the regular season 6-6-2, while the Warriors finish with 3-7-4. The Gryphons will move onto the OUA play-off rounds.

The Gryphons had a good start to the first half, with 5 shots on net in the first fifteen minutes of the match. Close attempts were made by Jenny Dunn (Vancouver, BC) and rookie Courtney Whiteside (Guelph, ON), but both were stopped by Warrior goal-keep Lesia Bandura (Kitchener, ON). A close call for the Gryphons happened after goal-keep Megan Klimas (Russell, ON) ran out of the net to stop an initial attack, but couldn't make it back in time for the rebound, so Danielle Naylor (Puslinch, ON) made an amazing save as she slid into Gryphon net to kick the ball out.

Dunn continued to have shots on net, one which in the 22nd minute reflected right off the cross-bar. The Gryphons first goal of the game came from Heather Kendall (Newmarket, ON) in the 23rd minute when she ripped the ball into the back of the Warrior's net before Bandura even had a chance. The Warriors responded in the 33rd minute when Adrienne Goldsworthy (Waterloo, ON) tied up the game after a free-kick was given outside the penalty box.

The second half didn't see much action until Kendall added the second goal of the game for the Gryphons during the 65th minute after she fired the ball out of Bandura's reach. Erica Bain (Niagara Falls, ON) secured Guelph's lead with a third goal in the 72nd minute, and nearly added a fourth to the board in the last minutes of the game but Bandura cut off the attack. A great way to end the season, the game finished in the Gryphons' favour, 3-1.

The Gryphons will now compete in a playoff game although dates, times and locations are yet to be confirmed.  Please visit gryphons.ca for the most up-to-date schedules.
