Gryphons earn 2-1 victory over Warriors


GUELPH - The Guelph Gryphon women's hockey team defeated the Waterloo Warriors 2-1 today at the Gryphon Centre. The No. 8 ranked Gryphons are now 14-6-3 in conference play and are third in the OUA standings.  The Warriors dropped to 4-18-2.

Dayna Kanis (Georgetown, Ont.) opened the scoring for the Gryphons 15 minutes into the first period to give Guelph a 1-0 lead.  This was Kanis' fifth goal of the season while Emily Corbett (Toronto) earned the assist.

Guelph's Patricia Rose Harris (Port Colborne, Ont.) scored an unassisted goal just four minutes into the second period to give the Gryphons a two goal lead. 

Waterloo's Sarah McCourquadale spoiled Gryphon goaltender Brooke Siddall's (Windsor, Ont.) shutout as she scored Waterloo's lone goal 15 minutes into the second period to finish the period 2-1 for Guelph.

The third period went scoreless for both teams.  The Gryphons outshot the Warriors 40-19 in the contest and both teams went 0-2 on the powerplay. Siddall earned the win making 18 saves.

The Gryphons take to the ice again next weekend when they host the UOIT Ridgebacks next Saturday (Feb. 5) and the Queens Gaels on Sunday (Feb. 6) at the Gryphon Centre.  Puck drops at 2:00 p.m. for both games.
