Guelph started out the first half with a big boost of confidence thanks to an early minute goal made by Jenny Dunn (Vancouver). The team needed this goal behind them because soon after the Mustang offence relentlessly attacked the Gryphon net. Although Gryphon defence was able to hold off, much of the first half was played in their end.
Western midfielder Chantal Blaise (Toronto) consistently fought against the Gryphon defence, and had a number of close calls and assists at net. But, with much help from Elizabeth Andrews (Markham, ON), the Gryphons were able to maintain their lead into the second half.
The beginning of the second half was reminiscent of the first, and most plays were found in Guelph's end. Gryphon goal-keep Joelle Chartrain (Calgary) played an amazing second half, saving nine shots on net, along with a number of other close calls that were dependent on her alone. Throughout the game the Gryphons continued to have difficulty moving the ball into Western's end, putting a lot of pressure onto their goal-keep and defence.
Finally, 65 minutes into the game Guelph's Alex Harriss (Dundas, Ont.) broke through the Western line and sped past their defence. She shot the ball straight past the goalie, bringing the Gryphons up to an even more confident 2-0 lead. Western tried to tighten up their game into the last minutes of the game but they were unable to follow through with a goal.
The Gryphons next play the Waterloo Warriors on Sept. 11th in Guelph at the Alumni Stadium. The game will begin at 1:00 p.m.
