Gryphons battle Lancers to tie & drop game to Mustangs

The women's soccer team tied the Windsor Lancers 1-1 on Saturday and then dropped a 2-0 final to the Western Mustangs on Sunday.

On Saturday against Windsor, Guelph striker, Kristen Southgate (Georgetown, Ont.) took advantage of unmarked territory in the Lancers 18-yard box after the defence had over-committed in the second half (55:00) to take the lead in the game. This made for a one versus one between Southgate and Lancer goalie Singer who was unable to stop the shot into the bottom corner of the net. With just under a minute left in the game, Windsor attacking midfielder Mereasa Brownlie took advantage of a loose rebound in Guelph's 18-yard box, which came off of Kelly Riccardi's long throw into the box. Brownlie was able to take advantage of the play and force a nice ball past the Guelph keeper to tie the game up at one. The Gryphons continued to apply pressure throughout the second half however were only able to come up with a couple scoring chances, countering on one of them. Guelph tallied eight saves, while Windsor had three.

Up next Guelph returns home this weekend for a pair of games against York on Saturday and Brock on Sunday.
