Gryphons Frustrated by Laurier Golden Hawks

The Guelph Gryphon men's hockey team were frustrated by a hot goaltender and an opportunistic group of workers in the form of the Laurier Golden Hawks in a 4-1 loss in Waterloo Friday night.

The Gryphons fall to 8-6-2 on the season.

Laurier's Ryan Daniels stole the show with a solid effort in nets stopping 43 of 44 shots the Gryphons fired.

Laurier opened the scoring in the first period on a hard working goal by Garrett Sinfield driving to the net.  Before the period was over Thomas Middup added another on a shot off the right wing. This despite the Gryphons outshooting the Hawks 18-5 in the period.

Guelph responded early in the second on a backhand goal on the powerplay by Kris Belan (Florence) at the goalmouth on a pass from Tim Priamo (Guelph) to close the gap to 2-1.  But Matt Reid added another for Laurier before the end of the second period to make the score 3-1.  In this period the Gryphons pounded 16 more shots on net to the Hawks 9.

Despite some close calls the Gryphons could not finish and the Hawks added another goal by Sinfield to complete the scoring in the third period.  Shots in the third were 10 each.

Andrew Loverock (Elmvale) gave way with ten minutes remaining in the game to Scott Van Bommel (Norwich) for the Gryphons.  In his third straight start, Loverock stopped 15 of 19 shots and Van Bommel stopped the five he faced.  Daniels went all the way for Laurier.

Guelph was 1/6 on the powerplay and Laurier was 1/2.

Next action for the Gryphons is January 2 when they travel to Ottawa to take on the Carleton Ravens.
