The CIS No. 5Guelph Gryphon women's hockey team fell to the No. 8 Brock Badgers by the score of 4-2 Thursday night at the Gryphon Centre.
Â
The Gryphons fall to 9-3-0 on the season, while the Badgers advance to 10-2-0.
Â
The Guelph Gryphons sought to extend their five game win streak to six this evening over the Brock Badgers, who were also trying uphold their six game win streak. Both Guelph and Brock were tied for second in the OUA standings, and after having previously won against the Badgers 3-0 this season, there were big expectations for a Gryphon win and an intense game. However for the better part of the game, Guelph would struggle for possession of the puck and lag in energy –allowing Brock to take advantage of their inconsistencies.
Â
Guelph right wing, Katie Mora (Guelph, Ont.) would make the first Gryphon goal of the game with an assist from Jessica Zerafa (Mississauga, Ont.), and Jenna Lanzarotta would also score with an assist from Jacklyn Upchan (Hanmer, Ont.). Brock's lead scorer Kelly Walker (Brampton, Ont.) would score two goals, as well as Brianne Veale (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) and Leigh Vanderveen (Niagara on the Lake, Ont.).
Â
In the first period Guelph would lack in energy and struggle to gain possession of the puck. Brock would open the scoring with a scramble in front of the Guelph net, allowing Kelly Walker to get a goal in over Danielle Skoufranis's (Thornhill, Ont.) back as she was down on the ice.
Â
The second period would begin with a burst of energy as Katie Mora would shoot out after the puck drop to score a powerplay goal on Beth Clause (Hamilton, Ont.) at just 7 seconds into the period. The energy would continue and Guelph would build momentum allowing Jenna Lanzarotta to score a goal at just under two minutes to put the Gryphons in the lead. This lead would be short-lived, as Brock's Leigh Vanderveen would even up the score at just four minutes in. Throughout the rest of the period, the teams would fight for possession, and Guelph would continue to falter in their passes, enabling Brock to persist.
Â
Guelph would begin the third period with another power play, but it would prove no aid to the Gryphons. Brock's Brianne Veale scored with just under thre minutes to go. Guelph would call a time-out and then pull Skoufranis from the net. Unfortunately Kelly Walker scored for the Badgers on the empty net.
Â
Up next the Gryphons will face York on Saturday November 27th at 2 pm.
