GUELPH – The women's hockey team defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks tonight at the Gryphon Centre by a final score of 9-3.
Despite a slow start the Gryphons added another game to their win streak, putting them at 4-straight wins. The Gryphon's record moves to 8-2-0 and they remain tied for second place with Brock in the OUA standings.
Victoria Woods (Orangeville, Ont.) would open the scoring for Guelph, and net the first goal for the Gryphons, Jessica Zerafa (Mississauga, Ont.) and Katie Mora (Guelph, Ont.) would both bag hat tricks, and Erin Small (Pickering, Ont.) would chipped in two goals.
UOIT's Jill Morillo (Whitby, Ont.) would score two goals for the Ridgebacks, and Sarah Worthington (Whitby, Ont.) would also net a goal –and these goals would officially end the Ridgebacks slew of shutouts.
The evening began rather slowly for the Gryphons, who after having 3 shut out wins, haven't really had any kinks in their divide-and-conquer plan. However, the Ridgebacks offense posed a threat for the Gryphons, who were seemingly struggling to get through the UOIT defense.
Guelph would finally succeed with a powerplay goal in the first period by Victoria Woods, with assists from Kimberley Wong (Mississauga, Ont.) and Carla D'Angelo (Hamilton, Ont.). However this victory would be short lived, as UOIT would work quickly to counter with a shorthanded goal from their forward, Jill Morillo with an assist by Rikki Palmateer (Cobourg, Ont.).
The Gryphon women would continue to struggle to find their groove during the game and would finally regroup, allowing Katie Mora (Guelph, Ont.) to get it into the net with help from Jessica Zerafa (Mississauga, Ont.) and Tamara Bell (Guelph).
At 52 seconds into the second period, the Ridgebacks would make their presence clear, and retaliate with a powerplay goal by Sarah Worthington.
Guelph would continue their struggle, and even with a two man advantage during a powerplay, the women would fail to score. UOIT would score another goal in the second by Sarah Worthington, and this would the catalyst to ignite the Gryphon women's offense.
From this point on the Ridgebacks would not see any more goals as the Gryphons, who after finding their feet, would proceed to dominate the latter half of the games. And by the second period, Katie Mora would have scored two goals for the Gryphons and put them ahead 4-3.
The third period would see the most action for the Gryphons, with 5 goals. Three of which were by OUA lead scorer, Jessica Zerafa. After struggling the first period and into the second, it would become clear that the Gryphon women had awoke from their daze in the third, and were raring to go. They would demolish the defenseless Ridgebacks, and end the game with a score of 9-3.
The women will be playing against the Queen's Gaels this Sunday November 14
th at 2:00pm at the Gryphon Centre.
