Gryphons blank Golden Hawks to remain undefeated


The Guelph Gryphon women's rugby team remain undefeated after blanking the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks 112-0 this afternoon (Oct. 2) in Guelph.  The Gryphons move to 4-0 on the season.

Guelph came out strong against a young Laurier team to score an impressive 112 points in their last home game of the regular season.

Rookie Gryphon Devon Keys powered her way through the Hawks defence to show that she belonged on the field with this veteran squad. First year athlete Dominique Monaghan also had an excellent game running hard lines to the inside and setting up her teammates. Stand-in captain Jacey Murphy (replacing the injured Caitlin Beaton) scored an unbelievable five tries. Not to be outdone, Britt Benn came on at half to score four tries and three converts for a total of 26 points.

 

The forward back were able to run quick ball of the back of rucks and saw a total of 12 tries from Katelyn McCreary (1), Steph DeVries (1), Catherine Wilson (2), Miranda Smith (2), Rose Harris (1) and Murphy (5). Back line tries came from Jane Kirby (1), Mimi Rahneva (3) and Benn (4). Katie McNally kicked 3 converts in the first half for 6 points.

 

Up next the Gryphons travel to St. Catharine's on October 8th to play the Brock Badgers at 2:00 p.m.
