The Gryphons had a devastating loss to the Western Mustangs after a stunning first half, on Sept 20 at Alumni Stadium in Guelph.
The Gryphon record moves to (0-2-2) meanwhile the Mustangs are 2-2-0.
The Gryph's only goal came from Brianna Rawson (Richmond Hill, Ont.) who shot 20 yards outside the penalty box and landed right underneath the crossbar out of the goal-keep's hands.
It came down to the last fifteen minutes, when the Mustangs replied with two sure fired shots.
The game began with high energy from each team and consistent pressure from both forward lines. Erin Grand (Toronto, Ont.) started off the game with a nice shot on the Gryphon net, but Victoria Parker (Toronto, Ont.) caught it in mid-air. Kristen Cavanagh (Whitby, Ont.) lived up to her reputation and stopped two consecutive attempts on net by Western players thirty minutes into the first half.
With less than ten minutes left in the first half, Gryphon player Brianna Rawson shot thirty yards away from the net and the ball landed right underneath the cross-bar, just out of Marissa Chinn's reach – scoring Guelph's only goal. Samantha Bright (Burlington, Ont.) manipulated Western's players with complex footwork, keeping control of the first half.
By the second half Western's offence began to pick up their game and play more aggressively, but it didn't stop Guelph from setting up an amazing play in the twenty-third minute. Bright passed the ball to Nat Ackerman (Guelph, Ont.) who fired it high at the net but it went just over the cross-bar.
With only 17 minutes left in the game Western scored their first goal when Grand had a successful tight corner shot right on net. Minutes later Grand went in for another goal but went wide and missed. Then, with seven minutes remaining Grand broke through Gryphon defence once again and scored the second goal, giving Western the win.
The Gryphons next play the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sept 26 at the University Stadium in Waterloo, Ont. The game starts at 1pm.
